The lac operon is a set of genes responsible for synthesizing the enzymes that metabolize lactose in bacteria. The set of genes have only one promoter and operator sequence. Therefore if one gene in the operon are activated, all of the genes in the operon are expressed. The main function of the lac operon is to metabolize lactose when that fuel is available.
